Pyrolysis is a thermal conversion process under zero or limited supply oxygen at a temperature of 300-700 ºC, which transforms organic materials into various products including carbonaceous solid biochar, liquid bio-oil and non-condensable gas. Biochar is of high interest as it can be used for C sequestration and for soil application which leads to a circular economy as biomass is recycled for use. The release of the moisture, decomposition of the volatile matter and changes of the C structure during pyrolysis produces biochar with the unique physicochemical properties and functionality.
